Get the TVs Out!

Since we're reading about maps in my first grade group, I asked them to make a map of their bedroom. The number of TVs was so depressing. Now, to be clear, I am not an anti-TV person. I love TV. I let my daughter watch TV. I think TV turn-off week is silly. But we also play outside and ride bikes and go to the library and bookstore and read. Some of these kids were showing me rooms with two beds and two TVs! I told them I was going to call Child Services...

Yep, pretty much all the families I visit as a Family Engagement Specialist have tvs in all the rooms. The one in the living room is ALWAYS ON throughout the visit - if I'm lucky, the volume goes down a bit. I practice talking just above a whisper to get that volume down. And the parents always send their kids off to their rooms to watch tv if they get bothersome. I suppose it's easy but . . . I don't like it either. And I'm a huge tv fan. Battlestar Gallactica is consuming my life right now, in the best possible way. But you know, limits! We have one tv and it's not in a bedroom.
