Elitist Giving

Tis the season for giving and if you don't already have a favorite charity, here's a list. Since I'm an elitist bastard I'll tell you that I've heard from some economists (I know) that picking one or two groups to steadily give to really does more in the long run than having a whole handful. Otherwise you end up spreading the wealth, but lessening your overall impact. I'm sure it's not hard to figure out who I've gone with. My lovely bride favors the second on the list but these are all great choices. What others do you recommend? Leave them in the comments...

The American Civil Liberties Union -- Because the freedom to be an elitist bastard can't protect itself. They fight for our constitutional rights including freedom of speech, privacy and technology, gay/lesbian rights, voting rights, women's rights, protection of religion and protection from religion. When the rubber hits the road, who are you going to call?

The Nature Conservancy -- This is the leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. They take a scientifically-based approach highly recommended by elite environmental scientists.

National Center for Science Education -- Defending our schools science against anti-science nonsense.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State
-- Preserving religious liberty, which there can be no rational argument made against. Currently headed by the Rev. Barry Lynn.

People for the American Way -- Another group fighting for voting rights, religious freedom, and equal rights. This is sounding less and less elitist as I go!

DonorsChoose.org -- As elitists, we definitely want to improve education! Here's a great way for some targeted giving if you have some extra Christmas money from grandma after the holidays.

The Union of Concerned Scientists
-- Another science-based non-profit working for the environment.

Doctors Without Borders -- This is an international medical humanitarian organization working in more than 60 countries to assist people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, elitists or not.

Mercy Corps -- Mercy Corps exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities.
