Book Gifts

This week's BTT asks what books you got for the holidays. I asked for the Dawkins and the Buffys. The Krakauer was a pleasant surprise. I got another one I asked for which didn't turn out to be what I'd hoped, so I'll be exchanging it. Exchanging books is just as easy and fun, so you can't really go wrong gifting books (as long as you don't write in them). I also got a gift card from My Lovely Bride: "Because I love you and you love books." She knows me too well.

I love Buffy the t.v. show, but have never read the books. Looks like you did quite well this year :)

I was a very lucky girl this Christmas! Here is my BTT response.

I perused a couple Buffy graphic novels from the library a couple years ago, but got distracted by other things. They were pretty cool, what I saw fo them.

Thanks for all the comments. There are plenty of Buffy comics, but these are the first two collections based on Joss Wheden's "Season 8" taking up right when the last season ended. Now I need the rest...

Krakauer is an amazing investigative reporter. Where Men Win Glory is on my "To Read" list. I recently re-read Under the Banner of Heaven.

I probably won't get to his book until I've graduated (and it's in paperback and I can get my book group to read it). I'll very be curious to hear more about your thoughts on "Banner" one of these days!

My family has decided not to buy me any more books because I buy then for myself constantly. But a few that I plan to pick up in the next few weeks are Ice, Fire, Wings, Lament and Leviathon.

I hear you. I could cut myself off and have plenty to read for the rest of my life.

Ooh, Buffy Season 8! I've been enjoying that a lot but, like you, I get the collections and not the single issues. It makes it hard to wait when other people online are discussing plot points! Enjoy them!

I got nothing! But the library has the Krakauer on hold for me.

"When it first came out, I read Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer. This is probably the best and most thorough book I have ever read about the many polygamist off-shoots of the LDS church. Krakauer details the violence and abuse that permeates these sects. Krakauer is fair in his depictions of current LDS positions but many LDS members felt he did not distance the behavior of the lunatic fringe from the LDS church. I think he did as best as he could under the circumstances. Let's face it; polygamy would not exist in its current form in the United States if it were not for the official actions of the LDS church in the 1800s and early 1900s. Any book on polygamy that did not detail this history would be intellectually dishonest. The book is by no means light reading. It will and should scare you a little. Introspection is a good thing to do but it's never comfortable or easy."
